Yesterday I learned a valuable lesson. Never assume all mail, is junk mail. While cleaning out a pile of unopened envelope; I stumbled upon a check from Chase. Generally, when I see mail from major banks, I assume it’s junk mail.  When I opened the envelope, I was surprised to find out it was a check written from Chase, that it was back pay from some interest they may have charged me during my deployment in Afghanistan over five years ago. The check was dated last May 2016. Almost a year ago!

To my surprise was the amount on it. $2,883! It was like stumbling upon buried treasure! As soon I called Customer Service to verify if it’s still valid, I went ahead deposited it for a rainy day.

Today was a buying spur for me. Initially I was planning to just buy AMZN, as they announced earnings today, plunging the stock down -4% as it did not me analyst expectations. AMZN was one of the stock I always want to add to my portfolio but unfortunately it’s not a dividend paying stock. It is considered a growth stock, and free cash flow tend to be reinvested into the company.

What to do when a growth company provide dividends? Go the ETF route.

Using the tools from www.etfdb.com, I was able to quickly find ETF’s with exposure to AMZN.

XLY was the preferred ETF as it has 2nd highest weighting along with lower expense ratio, with an over 2.33% dividend yield, compared to RTH, which has a higher weighting, but highest expense ratio and lower dividend yield at 1.83%.

Added more shares of SBUX, and XOM. Both had a div date next week, and I wanted to be listed on their book to receive 1st Quarter of the year.
